Hi,
My wife has 2 genital piercings, are thay likey to set off airport
metal scanners???
She has 2 medium sized ball closure rings.
She is worried that she may be subjected to a full body search if
security suspect she has something hidden in her vagina.
It is not the search that most concerns us, but the fact that the
delay may make us miss the flight!
She is happy to take the rings out, but why should she if she does not
have to.

Any advice please.

Hey, I have 32 male genital piercings. All above 8 gauge. All
Titanium. Sometimes the wand will set off, but never the main scanner.

Stainless steel, who knows?

And if all you're concerned about is timing, get to the airport
earlier. Or take them out on the way to the airport, and re-insert in
the plane's restroom.

You just wanted to brag on your wife's kootchie, didn't you?

Noticed you didn't say you had anything. Chicken?

In my experience it's unlikely. Since having multiple lumps of Titanium
and Steel in my body, I've travelled around Europe, the US and Mexico
without much issue.

Coming back from JFK to the UK I set off a metal detector with my shoes
- I was then subjected to a frisk and swipe with hand held detector,
when it bleeped - I simply stated that I had piercings. The Customs
officer asked to frisk a bit more thoroughly, did and was satisfied.

No. I set them off once with 30-plus large gauge stainless steel items of
jewelry.

These days they'd probably give me an orange boilersuit and a free flight to
Cuba!

Amusingly I also set the metal detector off once going into the BBC studios
in Shepherds Bush. The security guard's face was a picture when I explained
why I'd set the metal detector off and he wasn't remotely interested in
searching me. :o)

IMHO she will get through the walk-through scanners without a beep. If
she is selected for wanding and there are using the newest type of
tool and the agent elects to scan close to her crotch, it would go
off. However, they mostly avoid that area and usually attribute
activity to fly zippers.

As noted earlier, the simple statement that you have genital piercings
will likely send them scurrying for cover.

So, no likelihood of a problem.

If you're the types who worry or rush into the airport at the last
moment, find acrylic or glass temporary pieces and be calm.

Thanks for all the advice and comments.

Update of what actually happened at the airports.

My wife set off the scanner at Cardiff, and was "patted down" and
allowed through. She was also wearing a silver neck band and silver
braclets.
As we weren't sure what set it off, we took out the peircings for the
return trip, but kept the silver jewelery on. She did not set off the
scanner.
It would appear that the scanners can distinguish between silver and
steel, and aren't activated by silver.

Are rings available in silver, and if so has anybody any experience of
them?

Thanks once again for all your help
Peter

This is not necessarily so - all metal detectors are not equal. They
have variable settings, so it's entirely probably that leaving the
jewellery in would still not have set off the detector.

Silver is not a recommended metal for internal useage - mainly because
of the impurities, particularly nickel, added into the alloy used in
most "silver" jewellery.

If your other half is worried in the future, surely she could just
remove the jewellery one side of the scanner and replace the other.
Admittedly, this would be a pain if she flies on a daily/weekly basis.

Not necessarily (see also DNC's comment).

It may well have been the silver neck band/bracelets that set it off, or the
combination of those and the piercing jewelery.

The amount of metal in New Rock boots (or equivalent) can tend to set off
airport metal detectors too. :o)

Same can be said for internal metal - friend has a metal hip - it sets off
some detectors and not at others.

Will always depend on the settings at each airport. Some set them really
high, others have the sensitivity settings quite low.
